It is my distinct pleasure to invite you to attend the “Hydrogen Iron & Steel Making Forum 2021”

Steel has played a critical role in developing industries, including automotive, construction, shipbuilding, and electronics. With world steel production reaching 1.87 billion tons per year, steel has made the daily lives of people more convenient and richer. However, as global warming becomes a growing problem, the global society demands the steel industry to undergo a fundamental transformation due to its high share of CO2 emissions.

Today, we face an unprecedented challenge that goes beyond a low carbon industry but to a carbon-neutral industry. Steelmakers are required to fundamentally change the steel production process, and to urgently meet carbon neutrality goals through technological innovation. To achieve carbon neutrality, strenuous efforts and resources need to be put in for an extended period of time. However, we can significantly shorten the development period and save costs if global steelmakers work in close collaboration.

During the worldsteel’s 52nd Technology Committee meeting (TECO-52) last May, POSCO initially proposed a coordinated approach among member companies to discuss carbon neutrality with hydrogen ironmaking technologies. After several additional meetings, the “Hydrogen Iron & Steel Making Forum 2021” was agreed to be held on October 6-8, 2021, in Seoul, Korea.

At the Forum, global steelmakers and stakeholders will hold in-depth discussions on three main agendas: 1) Policies to reduce greenhouse gases, 2) Hydrogen iron and steelmaking technology, and 3) Collaboration in hydrogen ironmaking technology development.

The global climate change issue cannot be tackled by individual actions alone. As one of the greatest threats to humanity, TECO member companies must closely work together to come up with appropriate measures to cope with this perennial problem. Together, let us achieve the breakthroughs and shape the better future of 7.8 billion people in the world through a perfect balance between competition and collaboration.

Uncertainty from COVID-19 persists, but we look forward to the business environment improving as the availability of vaccines nears.

We wish everyone to stay safe and hope all the best for our steel industry.

Yours sincerely, Jeong-Woo Choi, CEO, POSCO CEO signature
